Free Shopify Business & Domain Name Generators
Thinking about opening a new Shopify store and having trouble generating names?
Everything you come up with sounds …well….meh!
Fortunately, like with almost everything Shopify, help is at hand through the available tech.
So, if you don’t come up with an inspiring store name when brainstorming with buddies, use one of the excellent business name generators available to name your Shopify business.
Here are the best name generators for you to try out…they’re all free to use so nothing to lose.
That’s followed by a few tips for finding a name for your store if you’re still having problems.
Shopify’s Business Name Generator
The native tool provided by Shopify is simple to use and, let’s face it, Shopify knows a thing or two about what works for ecommerce stores.
As one of the fastest-growing companies on the planet, you can trust Shopify to devise creative names to consider for your store. Just type in a word and brand names will start coming at ya!
You can also check domain availability, as you will likely want to purchase and use a dedicated domain name to boost your brand.
We entered sportswear and this is what came back – 100 names should be a good starting point for anyone:

If you find a name you can’t resist, you can reserve the name on Shopify and you will be prompted to start the process of opening your store
Namelix Business Name Generator
Namelix uses a more filtered approach to generating names than most of the other tools reviewed here. It also offers the additional benefit of logo ideas.

When we typed sportswear into the name generator, we were prompted to select whether we wanted a short name or a longer name:

Next, we were prompted for a name style:

And then the results page included logos and brand names to select from like this:

As you can see, there are some excellent creative ideas here – a big plus for this tool. The names are for sale and the premium ideas may cost you a few thousand dollars to purchase but if the name’s the one you want and has an available dot com domain name, it could be a small price to pay.
The Namelix service checks if the domain for the name you select is for sale or not.
All in all, the Namelix tool is a sophisticated solution and the visual representation you get with the name suggestions is a nice touch.
Oberlo Business Name Generator

Oberlo is a well-established name in ecommerce and Shopify apps. It is owned by Shopify so we should not be surprised that it provides a high-quality free name generator for Shopify brand names.
When we typed sportswear into the name generator, 100 names came back at us, just like with the previous tool:

Anadea Name Generator

The custom software development company, Anadea, also offers a free name generator that can be used for a business, store, website or app.
When we typed sportswear into the name generator, 142 pages of names were delivered!
In our opinion, some of the names were more creative and inspirational than those generated by some of the other tools covered here – so it may be worth a try.

NameStation Domain Name Generators
Rather than choosing your store name and seeing if the domain name is available, some entrepreneurs prefer to do things the other way around.
If so, NameStation is a great starting place. It is a free tool for checking whether domain names are available.
The only “catch” with this one is that you need to submit your email address and open an account for the tool to work – you cannot use it anonymously.

Once you have signed up, you can use filters to refine your search and generate names for free.
One feature that sets this tool apart from the other tools covered here is that it includes an option to hold a contest and hire the NameStation community of naming experts to help.
If you are prepared to pay a little for naming ideas, this could be a good option.
Business Name Generator
Business Name Generator is a free tool that works in conjunction with GoDaddy, the leading domain name business on the planet. Again, the connection is obvious between the business name and the domain name.
When you check a business name, a toggle that is automatically switched to ON says Check domain availability with GoDaddy. That’s pretty smart.
This one is very easy to use and there are no hoops to jump through before you receive name suggestions. We simply typed sportswear into the name generator and over 1,000 suggestions were returned:

The only negative is that the Business Name Generator tool seems to promote Wix as the ecommerce platform of choice rather than Shopify!
Naming by WriteExpress

Naming is a tool by WriteExpress, an online service that also provides letter templates and a rhyming dictionary.
The name generator tool is a little more sophisticated than most others featured here, with multiple fields in the search area rather than simply typing a keyword in.
As well as the main word you want, you can add expected combinations, numbers of syllables, rhyming preferences, and specify the number of names you want on each results page.
We typed in sportswear and several other options in the search area and hundreds of results were returned – not sure about “Sportswear Aardvark” though:

The Wordlab Business Name Generator

For the sheer number of options, Wordlab probably wins hands down amongst the free business name generator tools included here.
When we typed sportswear into the name generator, the tool generated over seven million names.
However, the relevance of these names seems questionable. This is a good example of a name that is not particularly relevant to sportswear:

In fact, many of the first names suggested seemed unconnected to sportswear. We didn’t fancy wading through seven million names to find a good one, to be honest.
We’re not sure if Wordlab’s other name generators are better but this one didn’t work for us.
5 tips for a stellar brand name for your Shopify business
If you’re still having trouble finding a name that makes you sit up and take note after trying these tools out, it’s time to get back to basics.
What makes a good name for a Shopify business?
Well, start with these five qualities and you’ll be on the right track…
Short and memorable
Short and descriptive is a great starting place: a name that says what you do without you saying it – but that is only a few syllables long.
You don’t want a tongue twister. Ideally, keep it short, descriptive, and memorable like Gymshark or Netflix!
Original and domain-name-friendly
If your brand name is original, it will be easier to find a matching domain name.
You’re not going to get sportswear.com unless you have a few million dollars spare, so it’s best to be as original and creative as possible.
Just use a tool like GoDaddy to check if the name is available – with the Business Name Generator tool described above, that’s done for you when you search for names.
Bear in mind that it’s generally advisable to go with a dot com domain name as, despite every effort to broaden horizons with domain name extensions, this is still the go-to format recognized the world over.
Searchable
If your business name can generate organic search traffic (free traffic through the search engines) all the better. You are more likely to be able to do this if your business name includes a searched-for keyword.
What are the main related keywords in your industry? Can you use one in your business name?
Because these business names are usually in high demand, you may have to balance creativity and originality with popularity when it comes to your business name.
Easy to spell
While the use of foreign words or phrases may add mystique to your business name, avoid words that can easily be misspelt.
You don’t want customers to mistype your name and end up somewhere else when searching for your store.
Seek feedback
Sometimes, the business owner is “too close to the action” to see what’s really going on. So, you might choose what you believe to be a great business name only for everyone else to think “What?”
Seek feedback and suggestions before settling on your name.
